On the 11th of February at 16.00, Narva Art Residency is opening an international group exhibition which synthesizes contemporary art and crafts. Artists from six different countries will be presented in NART. It will remain open until the 30th of April.
‘Image of the future with the shadow of the past’ positions the viewer at the crosspoint of the modern world and traditions. Crafts and art are put on one equal level, where art does not have more dominant value over crafts. Viewers are offered an opportunity to contemplate the role of older artistic expressions and the stories behind them in the creation of contemporary culture.
The exhibition invites people on a journey where the line between crafts and art is becoming blurred. This allows visitors to explore the fusion of traditional artistic expressions and techniques with contemporary art. Artists from Latvia, Ukraine, Belgium, UK, Italy, and Estonia, more specifically from Narva, are participating in the exhibition. Their works create a room where different forms of crafts can be newly interpreted, in the context of modern art. With the help of vivid traditional patterns, weaving, lace, textile and sound installations, the heritage of the past is passed on to the next generation. At the same time, curator and artists are forming a complete story about the importance and inclusion of crafts in contemporary art and their ability to absorb the cultural spirit of the era and transform according to the environment, yet preserving the traditional core nonetheless.
